Welcome Future Boy Scouts!
Troop 420 is one of the oldest troops in Carroll District currently celebrating its 50th year of continual scouting. The troop is sponsored by St. John Roman Catholic Church. However, you do not have to be a member of the parish or of the Catholic faith to join. We have scouts or various faiths who attend St. John, public, private, or are home-schooled.
Currently there are about 42 scouts in the Troop, ranging in ages from 11 to 17 years. We are a Boy-led troop and operate using the patrol method. We emphasize leadership and responsibility providing opportunities to "practice" these skills in a variety of situations.
We camp every month of the year except December, including three extended trips during the summer. Trips are a mixture of scouting, education, historic, fun and adventure. These trips include canoeing, biking, skiing, hiking, backpacking, climbing, caving, camporees, wilderness survival, whitewater rafting, shooting and a mixture of scouting skills. In addition, we have mini-high adventure trips in June and a high adventure trip each summer to a national scout base. We have attended many times the BSA Scout bases at Norther Tier, Philmont, Florida Sea Base, and this past summer the newest scout base, The Bechtal Summit - home of the 2013 National Scout Jamboree.
Our adult and youth scout leaders are highly trained and experienced. Training is integral to a successful Boy Led Troop, with the Troop running its own troop leader training and many scouts attending District and Council training. Several scouts serve on local scout camp staffs and national high adventure base staff.
Adults have served or are serving as advisors on multiple adventure treks to High Adventure Bases, Jamboree Scoutmasters, and have both required and optional Scout training including several attending Wood Badge training (advanced leader training). We also have several merit badge counselors in the troop and have a demonstrated record of scouts earning their Eagle Scout rank. From 2010, 19 scouts have earned their Eagle Scout rank, with several scouts in the final stages of earning their Eagle rank.
An established, successful fund raising program subsidizes troop activities as well as opportunities for scouts to earn money for their scout accounts that can be applied to many scout activities.
The Troop earned the Journey To Excellence Gold Unit Award (highest level) each year from 2011 forward
We meet in the St. John School cafeteria most Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm and invite you to drop in for a visit. St John is located at 42 Monroe St, Westminster Md.
Please feel free to call or e-mail if you have any further questions.
